COURSE DESCRIPTION
This trip will build and test your skills to meet the CYA Intermediate Standard. We begin in St. John’s Harbour with a complete safety at sea briefing and boat check out, followed by provisioning for the trip. While at the dock we will review the students’ expectations of the course and what is expected of them. Before setting out , lessons will familiarize the crew with the boat`s rigging and her systems, passage planning, basic navigation and weather related topics.
We depart heading to Crates Cove or Old Perlican Island. Topics covered while underway include docking, setting sails, points of sail, reefing options and anchoring. During the days ahead, we will discuss Tides + Currents, and practice points of sail, COB methods, and reefing. At least four days will be spent kayaking. Assembling the Feathercraft Kayaks, learning the basics of kayaking, kayak safety and self rescue will allow us to confidently tour the shorelines of many picturesque areas of Random Island and Terra Nova National Park.
En route to Bonavista Bay, students will practice sail trim, reefing and heavy weather sailing. With the exam written and corrected halfway through the course, you can relax and enjoy sailing, kayaking and hiking; then onto more practical exercises in anchoring, manoeuvring under power and anchoring under sail. Although not required for the Intermediate Standard, candidates will be taught the necessary skills to navigate using electronic methods including chart plotter and radar. You will also experience sailing a 100 nm overnight passage from Bonavista Bay to St John`s Harbour.
Voyageur 10.10 is a hardy and well laid out teaching vessel with a large inventory of sails. In light winds with over 2000 square feet of canvas it can make respectable progress. If caught in a storm Voyageur 10.10 can make way with its 110 square foot storm staysail. Learning and understanding boat systems is easy on Voyageur10.10 with its walk in engine/mechanical room.
Cost: $ 3,200.00 Includes course materials, all meals (except 2 meals ashore), use of feathercraft kayaks and specialty equipment. |
